The graphic novel Vino Generoso, published by PV Edizione, is a bold and refined transposition of Italo Svevo's famous novel. The trio of authors, Teo D'Apolito, Mino De Tommaso and Marco Russo, have been able to reinterpret the Swavian work with a visual language that mixes linearity and surrealism, creating an immersive and psychological experience for the reader.
The script, curated by D'Apolito and De Tommaso, keeps the depth of the original narrative intact, while the illustrations of Marco Russo, collaborator of Simone Bianchi, add a powerful and suggestive visual touch. The cartoons follow one another between flashbacks and dreamlike settings, destructuring time and transforming the story into a sensory journey. The graphic style, despite being dry and linear, allows itself to be contaminated by surrealist strips that amplify the protagonist's sense of bewilderment and introspection. The story, like wine, opens slowly, revealing the deep bond between memory, emotions and destiny. The protagonist, in a vortex of events and reflections, is confronted with his vices and weaknesses, in a crescendo that culminates in a feverish and revealing dream. The graphic novel manages to condense the essence of Swavian poetics, taking up recurring themes such as illness, love and obsession, and offering a new key to reading for a modern audience.
Vino Generoso is not only a tribute to Svevo, but also a work that celebrates the culture of wine as narration, art and identity. A book to savor slowly, just like a good glass of wine.
